Britain’s pentathletes get season underway at national ranking competition
Posted on Friday, 10th Jan 2014 by Steve Ballinger
Britain’s modern pentathletes will get their season underway at the first of two GB national ranking competitions in Bath this weekend.
The competition gives a host of younger athletes an opportunity to show their mettle alongside some of the more established athletes training at the National Training Centre at the University of Bath.
Jan Bartu, Pentathlon GB Performance Director, said: “Competition is the best form of training, so this will be good preparation for the athletes.
“They will come into the competition under a little bit of pressure and it will allow the coaching team to see where the improvement areas are at this point.
“The door is open, so there is an opportunity for some of the younger athletes to mix with the senior athletes and try to get a foot in the door,” he added.
London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray competes in the women’s event, along with Kate French and Freyja Prentice. The trio all represented Great Britain at last year’s world championships.
Former world junior champion Jamie Cooke, ranked four in the world, is among the men competing, along with Sam Curry and Tom Toolis, who are ranked 13th and 21st respectively in the world junior rankings.
As it’s the first ranking competition of the year, the swim and run/shoot will feature longer distances than in standard pentathlon competitions.
Both the men’s and women’s competitions take place over two days with fencing, swimming and the run/shoot at the Pentathlon GB National Training Centre at the University of Bath and riding at the West Wilts Equestrian Centre.
A second National Ranking Competition takes place next month.
Junior County Championship
Congratulations to Aramais for coming 2nd in the boys under 16s at the Junior County Championship, and to Leah for coming 3rd in the girls under 16s. Well done both.
Results of the 5th Veteran’s Winton Cup
The BVF Winton Cup was a great success as usual, and, like all the veterans events, went through the weekend without a hitch. The South West Region managed to win every weapon (foil, epee & sabre, male & female) and came out well on top of the competition. Gerry said “the competition in men’s epee was fierce, although some teams were fielding newer veteran fencers as the Welsh Open was over the same weekend. Unusually for men’s epee, we had done enough to win overall by mid Sunday afternoon so the pressure was off as we ended the competition”
If you are over 40, have a natter with Gerry who will give you details on the BVF.
5th Veteran’s Winton Cup
Gerry Simpson has been selected to fence at the prestigious 5th Veterans Winton Cup on the 10th & 11th of this month. Gerry, who will be fencing for the BVF South-West Region will be joining nine other regional teams and around 150 fencers at Telford.
Gerry said “the pressures really on this year as the South-West has won the previous four events, but we know the competition will be out to stop us winning again this year”
Thanks to all who attended the Wiltshire Competition on October 28th in Swindon. A great day all round, and congratulations to Gerry who came 2nd in the men’s epee, and John in the top 16. Well done, and a great result!
